The mandate:

Quebec-based companies sometimes face challenges in sourcing certain types of products, particularly in the field of rolled products. Due to the lack of local processing capabilities and growing demand, distributors encounter various obstacles that limit available volumes. This situation leads to extended supply delays and high costs for users and customers. Conducted by Innovitech in early 2022, this study aimed to estimate the consumption of aluminum sheets and plates in Quebec, in order to assess the necessary measures that the cluster and its partners should implement to facilitate the supply of these products.

The achievements:

The study was structured around three main components:

  1. Macro-economic data analysis: To better understand the volume of aluminum consumption in Quebec.
  2. Survey and interviews: Engaging with users of sheets and plates to identify their needs and potential constraints.
  3. Interviews with distributors: Confirming these constraints and estimating the size of the Quebec market.

The results:

To carry out these components, Innovitech, in collaboration with the study’s steering committee composed of AluQuébec, the Trans-Al network, and the Société de la Vallée de l’aluminium, established a list of approximately 70 companies. The response rate for complete and relevant surveys was about 34%. Additionally, around ten interviews were conducted to confirm the identified needs, including insights from four major distributors, which allowed for a highly confident estimate of Quebec’s consumption of sheets and plates.
